RELIEF WORK

NORTHERN COUNTY’S EX--I’ERIENCE Further evidence that the funds of the Unemployment Board are being expended with most satisfactory results is contained in a communication from the chairman of tho Hokianga Unemployment Committee to tho Minister of Labour (tho Hon. S. O. Smith) who is Chairman of tho Board. ‘At a- meeting of tho Hokianga County Unemployment Committee,” wrote the chairman, “which was widely representative, the question of the operation of tho various schemes was fully discussed. I was instructed to inform you that criticism that lias appeared in tho press from time to time, particularly from persons associated with similar committcesi and local bodies, regarding the nature of the work carried out, does not apply to work already completed in this county. It is further desired that I emphasise tlm fact that in all cases useful work has been accomplished, and small access roads have in some cases received a. base layer of metal that would not have been possible otherwise, because of the insistent demands that are made on the ordinary road allocation as voted through the Public Works Fund. The County Council has strained every point to provide the no cessary transport, and by working suitable men at- securing the stone, and others knapping and spreading, etc., really good results have been achieved. In the early days of its existence the Unemployment Board realised that tho success of its efforts to relieve unemployment depended to a considerable ex tent on the complete co operation of all local bodies in the administration of relief schemes. That belief has been fully confirmed • by the experience of the past few months, and the Hokianga Committee’s achievement indicates, as do tho records o* many similar committees, what excellent results can ho obtained by wellorganised co operation.
