Bursting into tears, the hangman at Szoiinok prison was compelled to, drag to the gallows the- unconscious bodies of Julia Czartas and Marie Czabo. convicted of wholesale poisonings. Czabo bore a child while in prison and fainted at the sight of the gallows. She did not hear the final sentence.

Czartas, protesting her innocence and madly fighting tho warders and shrieking for mercy, was carried to tho gallows where a screen hid the body of Czabo, who had already been hanged. Czartas fainted.

Tho spectators were horror-stricken, and the hangman, weeping bitterly, adjusted tile noose, ana while Czartas was still unconscious completed the execution.
