THEFT AND OBSCENE LANGUAGE

SEQUEL TO DISTURBANCE ON WHARF In response to a complaint that a man without a ticket was on the steamer Arahura just prior to her sailing for Wellington last Friday evening, Constable Berthelsen went onto the boat and saw the man near the cook’s cabin. Later lie arrested the man who made a scene on the wharf by violently resisting arrest and using obscene language. The happening had its sequel in the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr T. E. Maunsell, this morning when James Gordon was charged with the theft of 13s the property of Bertram Neilson, cook on the Arahura, and with the use of obscene language. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges, his excuse being that he had had too much liquor.

The Magistrate said he could not give accused the option of a fine and sentenced him to 21 days imprisonment on each charge.
