The “Sunday Times” mentions that a strictly revenue producing tariff applicable “to the whole range of imported goods is being discussed ill Labour circles. It is reported that the plan has a fair chance of success with the Cabinet, It is described as unlikely to raise tlie protectionist issue, and it is claimed it can be justified as related to the national, industrial, and financial crisis. Week-end gossipers say Mr Snowden will have no difficulty in meeting the Budget deficit without imposing additional taxation “either upon industry or upon the poor.” Air Churchill is expected to make a statement concerning his own political future at a meeting of Conservatives in his constituency this week. Air Walter Runciman has decided to retire from Parliament at the next election and devote himself wholly to business. Lord Joicev, a prominent north country and lifelong Liberal, announces secession from the party on account of its support for the Labourites. Air Neville Chamberlain admits changes in the staff of the Conservative organisation, which opponents are attributing to the failure of the Conservative Party to make the headway desired by the party leaders. The “Observer’s” political writer says Sir Oswald Mosley’s resignation from the official Labour Party is imminent. He intends to lead a new movement cutting across all parties.
