CONVICTION FOR. FALSE PRETENCES

SYDNEY, 20th February.
,At the quarter sessions today Clifton Arthur Luke, aged 29 years, an agent, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment oil three charges of false pretences. Luke, according to evidence, posed as agent of the “British Australia Trust,” wliich proposed to lend large sums of money to the Commonwealth Government. lie told a fanciful tale of millions for investment and brought in the names of Mr Bruce, former Prime Minister, Lord Derby and several British financial magnates who were supposed to be behind the scheme. Finally lie induced three persons here to advance sums aggregating £I3OO, which he converted to his own use.
