A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE

(To the Editor) Sir, —While none will dispute the necessity of everyone in New Zealand dome his utmost to alleviate the distress caused by the recent earthquake in llawkes Bay, it is difficult to understand why it should be necessary to organise Sunday concerts for the purpose, and therefore I would like to endorse the remarks of your correspondent “Schoolboy” on this subject. It is a pity that more of the present as well as the rising generation had not learned to look.at the matter in the same light as all the money required could be raised easily during the week if the public were willing to sacrifice a little instead of demanding something in return for what they give. After all many people go to an entertainment of this kind for their own pleasure quite as much as for the benefit of others. While not wishing to re-open a sub ject which was discussed in your columns a. short time ago, I would like to record my strong disapproval "of the practice of holding Sunday night afterchurch concerts for any purpose whatsoever. If it is imperative to give us pleasure in order to make us willing to help in the relief of other people’s distress it could quite easily be done on a week night. Would it not be more fitting, however, if wo were to deny ourselves' the pleasure of attending the pictures or other form of entertainment say for a week and give the money saved in this way as a straightout donation to the relief fund?—l am,, etc., OLD BOY. Motueka, 18th February. .
