THE FIRST POSTAL SERVICE
The first postal system was established in China. A service of mounted and foot couriers was organised to carry State edicts in China, about the year 1,00(1 B.C. In the sixth century A. 1)., the Chinese postal service had about I.bOO stations hv road. .‘IOO by river, and SO by land and water. About this time a money order system was devised and bought into use in China. The Chinese system of couriers lasted iiiiiil modern limes. Similar postal services are mention in the Bible and were used hv the Romans.
I h*s(s lirst appear in England in the fifteenth century, when they were established to carry military intelligence. In llibb. Thomas Witherings founded a system whereby private letters were allowed to he carried for fees for the lirst time in the seventeenth century. In ls.'!7 Howland Hill introduced the idea of a penny postage rate. Previous to (hat time letters were paid for according to I lie distance that lliev had to he taken.
