SPEED KING
CAPTAIN CAMPBELL, KNIGHTED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY', 19th February. The King has conferred a knighthood upon Captain Campbell, who reached Plymouth this morning by the Mauretania and continued his journey by the liner to Southampton, where a civio reception and banquet await him. The news of his honour was conveyed to Captain Campbell in a note from the Prime Minister, handed to him immediately the Mauretania reached Southampton. The note said: “I am glad to inform y?u that His Majesty has been pleased to approve that the honour of knighthood be conferred upon you.” The Prime Minister’s message expressed'his personal congratulations. In an interview Captain Campbell said he wished the United States aspirant for the record the best of luck. If a speed of 300 miles per hour, which it is stated the new ear would achieve, were reached, he would make an attempt for one better and regain the title. The Bluebird had not done her fastest yet. Visibility was one of the greatest obstacles to be overcome by future record breakers.
Captain Campbell will leave Southampton for London to-morrow. A great and popular welcome is in preparation.
