The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of John Stephen Barrett, a well known horse owner and cricket enthusiast, in his 55th year.

Before commencing the business of the City Council meeting last evening the .Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt) made reference to the death of Mr G. W. Hazleton, late Chief Postmaster at Nelson, a courteous and efficient officer who had the respect of the community. A letter of condolence and sympathy is to be sent to Mrs Hazleton and her son, Mr J. Hazleton.

The following Air Force appointment was announced in last night’s Gazette: V. J. Somerset Thomas to be Flight-Lieutenant and to be flying instructor at Wi'gram Aerodrome, Sockburn.

At the annual meeting of the United Press Association a presentation of a substantial cheque was made to the retiring Manager, Mr W. 11. Atack, to whose ability and fidelity many tributes were paid.

Professor R, Lawson, of Dunedin, and Mr A. K. Anderson, of Christchurch, have been elected to fill vacancies on the University Entrance Board caused by the resignations of Professor Thompson and the Rev. Mr Crosse, representing the Academic Board and registered private and secondary schools. In each case only one candidate was nominated.—Press Association.
