LAST OF AUSTRALIAN CRUISER
PIONEER SCUTTLED (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 19th February, 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. What was left of the old Australian cruiser Pioneer after stripping at Garden Island was towed to sea yesterday evening and scuttled. The vessel was built 32 years ago and was one of seven experimental types midway between a torpedo boat and a light cruiser, which failed to realise expectations. The pioneer, nevertheless, did great work in war time, including assistance in the destruction of the German warship Konigsberg, and the capture of several merchantmen.
