JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES

NELSON DEFEAT MARLBOROUGH At Trafalgar Park on Saturday the Nelson junior representatives met and defeated Marlborough in the first liomc-and-honie match of the season. There was only a fair attendance of the public. The match proved a triumph for Nelson's backs. While Marlborough's forwards were superior they were not so far ahead of Nelson's as to enable them to dominate the game. The teams were as follows: — Nelson. —Kerr, C'annington, Carnahan, Drummond, Burns, Martin, Kinzett (captain), Yarker, Westley, Kieley, Turley, McClune, Hunter, McConchie and Hooper. Marlborough.—Proderson, : ,' Barney, Bartlett, Gibbons, Meßride, Gee, Hore, Roberts, Lane,-Martiu, Denton, Chandler (captain), Bryant, Weetman, Thompson. Marlborough won the toss, and Nelson faced the sun which proved clis-

concerting at times, especially when the home team was defending. From the commencement it was seen that Nelson's back line was every bit as good as in former years, and it was apparent that it would pay Marlborough to keep the game tight, relying on their heavier pack. This, however, they failed to do, and Nelson's backs, given the ball by their forwards on every possible occasion, dominated play for long periods. The ball was heeled perfectly to the Nelson half, Westley, and travelled through the backs to McConchie on the wing, who finding himself blocked, Centred over the goal-line. A Marlborough man took the ball cleanly, but before he could do anything with it he was downed, and the ball rolling Turley's way the Nelson second live-eighth dropped'on it for the opening score of the game. Kinzett converted from m difficult angle. Nelson 5, Marlborough 0. Lane, the Marlborough half, worked the "blind" side of a scrum to Chandler. The winger was not stopped till he reached Nelson's 25 where a series of line-outs took place in which the Marlborough forwards were definitely superior. Marlborough's tactics at this stage gave Nelson' many anxious moments, and Hooper at full-back put in sterling work fielding high kicks in the face of the Maroon vanguard. Westley was also showing up with bis safe handling. Weetman had a' shot at goal from a free kick but missed. Lane made ground with a splendid line kick and from the line-out the Marlborough backs went away but failed to penetrate and play was'takeu to the other end where Kerr missed an attempt to goal from a penalty. Marlborough came back, Lane went on the "blind," dummied, and sent the ball to Weetman who ran strongly before being grassed by Hooper with the best tackle of the day. Roberts attempted to goal but failed. Lane sent the ball to Martin to Denton hut the movement went across field and Hunter broke through and streaked away with only the full-back to beat. Thompson rose to the occasion, as had Hooper just previously, and a cut in failed to stop him from getting his man. Marlborough worked down the left wine to Nelson's line. Lane once more went on the "blind" and let the ball out to Chandler, who scored a neat try in the corner. Roberts missed with the kick. Marlborough 3, Nelson o.

McClune, Nelson's centre, went away brilliantly but delayed his pass and Brvant dropped him. Bryant was a difficult man to pass and McClune with advantage could have passed the ball more to his wingers. Kieley, Nelson's first five-eighth was proving the star back. His straight running and excellent handling paved the way for brilliant movements. Turley also made penetrating runs, but used the stabkick overmuch when his wingers were waiting for a run. McConchie had few opportunities to show his clever runs. An exchange of ping pong kicks marked the opening of the. second spell and Chandler got through a lot of work, neither side being able to find the line. Westley worked the "blind" to McConchie and the Nelson forwards kept the movement going to Marlborough's 25 They were packing better now but still we're inferior to the Marlborough forwards of whom Roberts and Gee were outstanding. Kerr and Canmngton were fighting strongly for Nelson, Martin and Carnahan showing out m the loose and feeding their backs. Kinzett got in' among the Marlborough five-eighths and Bryant came in to relieve. This player supported his five-eighths splendidly and was Marlborough's best back. His liveeighths were throwing their passes very low and rarely took the ball on the run. \ Nelson passing rush went across the held and back again, and at this pciiod the Marlborough defence rose to oreat heights. For some time they were hemmed in their 25 and Nelson's backs indulged in.rush after rush with remarkably sure handling. Westley shot on the "blind" side of a scrum, gave the ball to Hunter, and the winger sidestepped across the line for a try. Kinzett missed with the kick at goal. Nelson 8, Marlborough 3. Then Marlborough pressed on Nelson's line, but Carnahan and Martin broke up a ragged passing rush and came past half-way where Prodcrson took a mark. The closing of the game was very interesting and the pace became very fast. Marlborough heeled from a scrum in which department the teams were about even. Then from a Nelson passing rush McClune potted an excellent goal from the 25. Nelson 12, Marlborough 3. Nelson were soon back to the attack havino- all the better of the play, and from a scrum on the 25 the ball went through the hands of the backs to Hunter \fcho scored his second try after a <.-ood run. Ken- failed to convert, and the game ended soon after with the score unaltered. TT^,IT ~ NELSON 15, MARLBOROUGH -3. Mr R. Veysey capably controlled the. name. Ten' free-kicks were given against Nelson during the match and live against Marlborough.
