There were now five hundred boys at, the college, two hundred of whom were boarders. Mr W. J. Walker proposed the toast of "The College". . Replying, Mr H. F. Band assured old boys that the spirit of the school was as good as ever and that the college had a future as bright as the past had been distinguished Mr R M. Bruce proposed the toast of "The. Masters," to which Mr G. .7. Lancaster, headmaster of Christchurch Boys' High School, replied. lie hr.d, be'said, been master at- Nelson tor sixteen years and had learned a great deal from the school during that time. One thing which had struck him was the amount of work demanded of masters at Nelson College. Their duties were by no means ended when school was finished, and they were expected to devote time and energy to every activity of the college. He also paid a tribute to the prefect system. Another thing he had always noticed, .and here Nelsonians held a unique position so tar as he knew-he bad never heard all old Nelson College boy speak ill ot his school. Indeed, theirs was aggressive loyalty. When a boy went back on his old school it usually meant . that the boy was wrong and that the school was wrong, too.
