SACRIFICES FOR EFFICIENCY
EVENTUAL RETRIBUTION \ ; "Eventual retribution is generally the lot of the inefficient, reckless, or dis-J: :' honest man of business. No brilliance will save him from disaster in the long* run," says Lord Wakefield of Hythe, ina contribution to the Yorkshire; "Evening News". "There is, however, a cer> tain comfortable slackness, not pronounced enough to : lead to complete > ruin, but yet serious enough in the aggregate from the national, and civic. point of view. We owe it not only to ourselves, but to the community, to put" our whole energy into our.business un-- • dertaking. . Half a loaf may be'better - ! than no bread; but half a mind is a. dangerous economy. Go in to win. •If v your business offers you a choice be-, tween a jog-trot mediocrity and steady energetic expansion, national interests demand that you should respond to the' opportunity. It is possible—just possible—to drag on in business with old,' worn-out plant, in dark, ill-planned, unsuitable buildings. I think it is agood tiling that' it should be l increas-. ingly difficult to do so. We are looking eagerly to-day for signs of hope; in a world-wide situation which is undoubtedly serious. I find ground for that hope in the fact that hundreds of British firms, faced with the many post-war difficulties, have not hesitated to make tremendous sacrifices to put themselves in a state of maximum efficiency. It is the hardest part of a business man's problem to make immediate and obvious sacrifices for a revived prosperity, which must be to some extent a matter of faith. It is being done every day, and it is the faith of its citizens in the ultimate destiny of the nation and the Empire whHi will restore our commerce to its rightful place in the modern world."
