THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIBLE

Tlie Old Testament was first written in Hebrew, and the New Testament in Greek and Aramaic. Early translations vyere made in Latin and Greek. When the translation into English was undertaken the translators found many corruptions and errors which had crept into the earlier translations. Whenever they were in doubt over a word they had it printed in italics, to show that it was not necessarily the word used in the original. They also had printed in italics those phrases vrhich.it was impossible to translate into English without the insertion of additional words to make the meaning clear.
