BOXING

GENERAL COMMENT FIXTURES Cleverlcy-Hughes—Christchurch, 3rd June (probable). Grime-Donovan —Hawcra, oth June. Lcckic-Shack —Auckland, June. Lcckie-Donbvan, 21st June.

Hay and Hancock will-meet in Hastings if negotiations do not fall through. s Report states that Heency will light again, but must be guaranteed £IOOO a light. •"' ' , After Donovan gets through with his contest with Grime at Hawera On (ith June, he will meet Leckie in a return at New Plymouth. Leckie and Sarron will most probably meet under the auspices of the .Napier Association. Leckie's win over Donovan has certainly put him back in the boom.

Leckie's Come-Back Johnnie Leckie [confounded ia big section of the boxing critics when he gained a technical knock-out over Tommy Donovan :>at Napier on Saturday night. Leckie staged a great comeback after his long lay off/having had only one fight since he sustained a broken nose in his fight'with Sarron in Wellington. The match with Leslie was not, generally regarded, as a real test of the ;champion's prowess, and although }s■ won easily, most observers believed that he >would need more serious fighting, before being able to put a stop to the all-conquering Donovan's career. Leckie, however, is a remarkable performer and he definitely proved that Sarron's prophecy■'•was. dead, right. The r«sult indicates that when 'Sarron declared his strong . belief in Leckie's ability compared with Donovan's he was not simply venting spleen over his defeats by the Waitara boy.Leclde , and Donovan. have a return ■ match i or about,' 21st - June at New '■Plymouth; : Donovan will' liave to do some hard thinking in the meantime. He will now be a believer in the old saying that "the straight left beats the world."Grime and Leckie will be a match for some association looking for a good fight.. .. . ;,.■ -

Camera's Hardest

For the first time in his eight contests ill the States, Primp Camera, the giant Italian, had to.go more than two rounds to beat his opponent in Philadelphia. Camera, in fact, had to go into the sixth round to win, and beforof'thflt. he had* been so badly mussed up by Roy ("Ace") Clark, a tall, angular, Philaclephia negro, that there was serious talkf of-stopping -the bout. Camera had received possibly the biggest of'his comparatively : short boxing career. ■ Nevertheless, he scored his eighth successive knock-out win in America,,as Clark collapsed in less than two and a half hiiiuites after the start of the sixth round. At the beginning of the fifth round it" seemed that Clark's finish was ; near at hand, but he surprised himself when an early right cross bouiiched off Camera's righteye and raised a Jump, by. this success he tried a few more rights alid the lump grew, and'- Camera's eyes began to close slowly. At the end of the fifth round the crowd was thrtfwn iilto an indescribable babel.of turmoil by the announcement of Dr. Baron, the physician in attendance, that after .examining Camera's eyes : he, thought it would be advisable to stop the fight. Leon See, however, was granted "one more round," and the sixth round was almost finished when Clark sank to the.floor for the count. Camera's eyes, howeverj weresd much that his manager cancelled all engagements fOr : the foli6#irig month. . '
