OFFICE WORK BY MACHINERY
Office work is ever becoming more mechanical. There are appliances which talk, calculate, open envelopes, stamp letters, give correct cash fact, do everything but think and strike for higher wages. An envelope-address-ing machine which acts as a card index as well as addressing an envelope in one movement, an envelope-opener and ail envelope-sealer are almost uncannily efficient machines. The electrically-driven envelope-opener can open 500 letters a minute, but the fastening is done at the rate of only 200 a minute. "Continu-. ous stationery" is another amazing development. It, is stamped office paper which, with a carbon paper, passes over the typewriter roller in a "continuous stream, doing away with the business of putting in and taking 'but each sheet. A machine for buying "postage" by meter, like gas, is another marvel. It seals, franks and cancels the cost of postage. Files and folders, a "noiseless" typewriter (it really is almost silent), and an adding machine which can, count'the figures at an amazing rate, are other inventions.
