CONDITIONS IN WELLINGTON

DEMANDS ON HOSPITAL BOARD

WELLINGTON, This Day. Unemployment is becoming so rife in the city that it is questionable whether the Wellington Hospital Board will bo able to continue meeting the heavy demands for maintenance. This statemen was made at a meeting of the board yesterday, by the chairman of the Social Welfare Committee, Mr G. Petherick, who reported that during the period from Ist April to 6th May a total of 452 cases had been attended to, of which 127 were new cases. A total of 639 cases remained on the committee's hands at the end of the period. Of these 175 were due to unemployment, which affected 796 persons. Cash grants had totalled £571.

CITY COUNCIL PROPOSALS

WELLINGTON, This Day. . Reference to the City Council’s efforts to interview the Prime Minister in regard to unemployment was made by Mr M. F. Luckio (Deputy Mayor) at a meeting of the council. Mr” Luckie said that the council’s representations concerning the relief of unemployment would be considered by Cabinet to-day. Proposals made by the Works Committee for relief would be dealt with upon Cabinet giving some satisfaction. It had been difficult to approach the Government owing to the unsettled state of politics. Overtures had been made to the Minister of Labour, and it was expected that ar answer would be received from Cabinet at an early date.

LIVELY MEETING

WELLINGTON, This Day. A very lively meeting took place at the Trades Hall yesterday, when Mr Bromley, president of the Trades and Labour Council, on behalf of the Labour Unemployment Committee of the council, reported on the steps taken since the last demonstration of unemployed in the city. A number of speakers, self-styled Communists, set up an attack on the orderly conduct of the meeting, the Unemployment Committee being taxed with inefficiency and lethargy. At one stage the chairman declared the meeting closed, hut it was reopened, and the following resolution was carried“ That this meeting expresses confidence in the Unemployed Committee of the Trades and Labour Council and pledges itself to work with the organised trades unionism of New Zealand.
