CURLING

Curling lias been popular in Scotland for at least three centuries, and has, indeed, almost become the national sport. In some parts of Lanarkshire and Ayrshire the game is called "kilting," possibly from its resemblance to quoits. There are nearly 800 curling clubs. Adherents of curling claim to be a united brotherhood. Duke and dustman, they say, are equal when once their snow-shoe-clad feet are on the ice and a housemaid's broom (to keep the rink swept) is between their hands.
