APPRECIATING MUSIC
There are many ways of appreciating music. For some of us Ihe pleasures ,we get from listening to it without much thought of its artistic value are enough. For others of us our pleasure in music mainly consists in our appreciation of its artistic worth. In the same way we appreciate singing, or instrumental performance, chicJly in those two ways, and our own playing or singing also is pleasurable in varying degree,— as we are trained to appreciate music as an art, or as we are not so trained. Each taste in music is sure of its reward. But it is almost certain that the greatest musical pleasure is enjoyed by those who have learned something of the inner virtues of music. Hence it is wiser to study music if we have opportunity to do so, than to neglect that opportunity.
