RAILWAY LOSSES
N.S. WALES LINES TREASURER'S ESTIMATE OVER TWO MILLIONS PROPOSALS FOR MEETING PROBLEM (United Press Association—By Elcctrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 2nd April, 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Losses of £2,084,000 on the State railways and £348,250 on trams during the year were forecasted by the Treasurer, Mr Stevens, in his financial statement to the Assembly.
Among the proposals for dealing with the problem is the recovery of a portion of business lost to road transport. Legislation is being considered authorising the withholding of lower freight rates from" consignors who utilise road transport for a portion of their business; also to withhold in similar cases the starving stock rate. Passenger concession fares will be reviewed.
