Mr M. H. M. Fraser (Murchison), Mrs Ethel Stewart (Motueka), and Mrs E. A. Woodward (Takaka) have been appointed honorary child welfare officers under the Child Welfare Act. 1925. The appointment is gazetted of Mr C. M- Smith, M.A., B.Sc. (Forestry) as Chief Inspector of Forestry for a period of five years. Mr Smith was formerly Conservator at Nelson. The Rev. W. J. Berry, who was seriously injured in a motor cycle smash up several months ago in Takaka is now making definite progress towards recovery. YVith the aid of two walking sticks he is able to'take some exercise on the verandah and on the lawn at the Nelson Hospital. Mr J. Russel Brunt, registrar of the Justices' Association, being recognised as the founder of the first Justices' Association in the Dominion in 1918, was awarded by the recent Conference with a gold medallion, with the word "Founder" inscribed. Mr C. M'L. Smith, M.A.. B.Sc, (For.), has been appointed Chief Inspector of Forestry for a five-year term. Mr Smith was born in New Zealand and educated at the Otago Boys' High School, and later he graduated M.A. of the New Zealand University. He served with the New Zealand lorces during the war and rose to the rank of captain. After the war he forestry at Edinburgh University, and took his degree in that subject. Subsequently Mr Smith came to the Dominion and joined the State Forest Service as a forest ranger. In 1925 he became Conservator of Forests at Nelson, and three years later was transferred to the head office of the State Forest Service, where he has remained since.
