UNITED STATES' NEW TARIFF
HIGHEST RATES IN HISTORY
MEASURE THROUGH SENATE
(United Proas Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright)
WASHINGTON, 22nd March
The Senate to-night completed action on the rates of the new Tariff Rill, known as the Hawley-Smoot measure, which has been pending since last September. The rates payable represent the highest in history for farm products, and high duties for sugar, cement, wool, and many necessities of life. The Senate adjourned to-night after acting on individual amendments and disposing of all schedules, with a prospect that the Bill will be passed finally late on Monday or Tuesday, after insurgent Republicans and Democrats have delivered denunciatory speeches. The measure will then, go to a conference with the House of Representatives. The Tariff Bill constitutes a general revision of more than half the tariff structure, and departs greatly from the original programme announced by President Hoover, who favoured increased farm rales but only limited revision of industrial rates. Republican leaders, 'however, believe that the President will • sign the measure as it emerges from tho conference.
