REFUSAL TO SAIL
WAITEMATA'S CREW
OBJECTION TO CHIEF ENGINEER

WESTPORT, 23rd March. Thirty-three members of the crew of the Union S.S. Company's Waitemata appeared before Messrs Fox and Scanlon, Justices of the Peace, on Saturday charged with refusal to take the vessel to sea, the destination being Suva. Evidence was taken in which it was made clear that the crew would take the vessel to Wellington provided the chief engineer did not sail with them, a conviction and fine for assault on a fireman having been recorded atrainst the chief engineer during the vessel's dtay in Westport. The Court adjourned till Monday morning on the understanding that the crew would resume duty and take the vessel to Wellington without the chief engineer, who is to leave overland tomorrow morning. The Waitemata sailed for Wellington this morning at 4.25
