DELHI, llth March
Tho Government scored a striking victory in the Assembly yesterday when an amendment moved by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Leader of the Opposition, calling for a statement of Government policy in connection with Patel's arrest and upon Gandhi’s campaign, was defeated by 53 votes to 30. Sir James Crcrar, Home Minister, asked the House to commend the promptitude and resolution of the district magistrate who sent Patel to gaol and explained that the latter lmd made a speech advocating non-payment of taxes and tho boycotting of Government servants. The Minister said the Viceroy already had declared the Government’s policy and his determination to maintain law and order.
Malaviya said a hundred thotsa'id men were ready to follow Gandhi to gaol. He warned the Government that the movement was not an isolated instance of civil disobedience hut an organised campaign, and unless the serious situation was brought to the notice of tho Imperial Government India would go before the League of Nations and place her case before the bar of tho civilised world.
