PLUNKET SHIELD

WELLINGTON GO FROM KAO TO WORSE AUCKLAND DEC LA 11K WITH BIG SCORE (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Wellington went from bad to worse in tilt- Shield match yesterday. The bowlini' was respectable at first, but became piffle, and the fielding simply shocking, every chance that did not lob into a man’s hands being missed. The result was that Mills achieved a fine century, and all the men scored easily. Wensley and Alleott knocked up 104 in threequarters of an hour, and Alleott then declared at four for 354. Scores:— AUCKLAND First innings 433 ‘ WELLINGTON First innings 283 AUCKLAND Second Innings Mills, c Gallichan, b Massey 105 Anthony, b Massey 56 Weir, b Lowry 38 Gillespie, c Henderson, b Massey ... 24 Wensley, not out 51 Alleott, not out 53 Total four wickets for 354 Bowling:—Lowry took one wicket for 64 and Massey three for 83 were the only bowiers who got wickets. Going in again Wellington lost two wickets for 76, taking two hours to make them. They certainly played the game that was required, but it was a dreadfully slow exhibition to see. Maiden after maiden over was sent down, and the batsmen were merely blocking. Both Auckland’s bowling and fielding ''.’ere 100 per cent, above Wellington’s. If the latter does manage to save the game it will be very hard luck fo>r Auckland to lose the Shield to such an incompetent side. TO-DAY’S PLAY WELLINGTON, This Day. The final day’s play in the Plunket Shield cricket match, Wellington v. Auckland, opened in fine weather, with a fresh southerly wind. Light rain overnight had had little effect on the wicket which was still in excellent order. Hollings, 32, and Foley, 13, continued the innings to the bowling of Alleott, with the wind, and Wensley. Only a single came off the first two overs. Foley was using his pads freely. Progress was slow though several byes helped to improve the total. In Wensley’s second over Foley survived a confident appeal for lbw. Ninety appeared after a quarter of an hour’s play. The batsmen snatched some smart singles. At 11.30, after a very slow period Alleott cleaned bowled Hollings. 94—3—34. The outgoing batsman had played a steady defensive innings. Lowry followed. The score, was then 94 runs for three wickets: Hollings, li Alleott 34; Foley, not out 20; Lowry, not out 0; extras 22. - After playing a defensive innings, which lasted 55 minutes, Foley opened out to Wensley but lifted the hall to Gillespie at cover-point. 9S—4 —2l. McLeod was next. Some deliveries were rising sharply off the pitch. The hundred went up after the innings had been in progress 145 minutes. The field was kept placed close in and the batsmen found difficulty in getting runs. At noon the score was 110 for four: Foley, c Gillespie, b Wensley 21; Lowry, not out 5; McLeod, not out 4; extras 28.
