BUSH FIRES
DAMAGE IN VICTORIA
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)
(Received 4th February, 12.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. A forest fire in the Snowy river district, near Orbost, assumed alarming proportions. It crossed the river and destroyed stocks, railway sleepers, and cutters' plant, also a large area of grass. Serious bush fires threaten grass in the Mt. Wellington district. A farmer named Hayward went out to fight a bush blaze in the Black ranges, near Sta'well. When he returned he found his six-roomed house burned. It is believed this was due to beeswax left melting on the stove boiling over.
