DUNEDIN, 3rd February

Wellington won (lie Plunket Shield match after a game of nps and downs in which each side did ils best to throw the game away when it was practically won. The game was open when Otago had 258 to make in the second innings, and when they had 180 on the board for four wickets the game was then in theis hands.

Shepherd gave Otago an excellent start witli 49 and the colt Cavanagh did still better. He and Alloo put on 88 for the fifth wicket, and then the whole side shut up completely, Hollings and Baker knocking over the last six wickets for 13 runs. The Northerners won by 65 runs. Auckland must now beat Wellington outright to win the Shield. The scores were: —Wellington, second innings 172 —McGirr 40, Newman 10 not out. Dunning took four wickets for 57, Elmes one for 25, Maloney two for 20, Alloo none for 15. Otago, second innings, 193 Shepherd 49. Cavanagh 87, Limes 14, Alloo 15. ilollings took two wickets for 18, Henderson three for 58, Baker five for 59. Badcock bowled 12 overs for 20 runs but did not get a wicket.
