NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

ANGAS AND MISS NICHOLLS WIN RESPECTIVE TITLES

WELLINGTON, 3rd February. Angas (Canterbury) won tho men's singles at the tennis championships from 1). France (Wellington). The latter constantly netted the ball in the first set and Angas repeatedly beat him with clever play. France did better in the next two but lost tho third and in the fourth was completely smothered. The score was 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Miss D. Nicholls won the ladies' singles, beating Mrs Melody 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. The latter failed in the last set to cope witli her opponent's accurate driving and placing, and was kept running about the court till tired. Both finals were interfered with by a chilly, gusty southerly. In the men's doubles D. France and Malfroy (Wellington) beat Wilson (Wellington) and Stedman (Auckland) 8-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. The mixed doubles were won by Mrs Thomson and Wilson from Miss M. MacFarlaue and Sandral. Mrs Thomson was the heroine of this game. Her play was brilliant and quite outshone the rest.

Junior results were: Boys' singlesRobertson (Timaru); boys' doubles— Robertson and Perkins (Wellington); mixed doubles —Heenan and Miss Morrison (Canterbury. The Wilding Memorial Cup went to Wellington.

SYDNEY, 3rd February.

In the inter-state tennis tourney the New South Wales men's and women's teams defeated Victoria by wide margins and won the men's contest with Queensland, though some keenly fought games were witnessed. The most notable feature was the defeat of tho Queensland pair, Moon and Cumrnings, by Hungerford and McCausland 7-5, 8-6. The visitors subsequently, won a keenly-contested match with Sproule and Dunlop 5-7, 7-5, 8-6.

The State championship now in pro gress is so far confined to the preliminaries.-
