GOLF

STEEL CLUBS AGAIN (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, 19th December. Golfers have shown no enthusiasm over the steel clubs which St. Andrews have so surprisingly admitted to the game. It was thought that the professionals and stores would receive so many orders that they would not be able to execute them. As a matter'of fact, there has-been little or no demand for them. / " , Inquiries showed that the professional, who had sold more than ]ialf-'a-dozen during the first week they were legal im-< plements, was the exception. Those players who got them for experimental purposes are dubious as to their merit. Most, in fact, have already condemned the irons. The fault in regard to them is that the head comes through too quickly, and the ball is very liable to be pushed out. It is, of course, definitely established that, in playing the irons, the hands should go through in advance of the club. The steel drivers are more pleasing. Some players declare that they give them more strength —a matter of ten yards or so. There is little likelihood of the professionals adopting the new clubs for their own use, and, so far as amateurs are concerned, it is possible that they may carry a steel driver or spoon m. their bags, but in,-.their case, too, they will probably remain faithful to the wooden shaft. . It may be that the steel shafts will be improved. The writer has seen a special set sent from America .which made a big appeal. But the price was £3O, and that, of course, is prohibitive. At present the steel shaft is just as expensive as the wooden one.
