STEAMER MATANGI CHARTERED
TO RELIEVE NELSON-WELLING TON FERRY STEAMERS
The Anchor Steamship Company has chartered the Northern Steamship Company's twinscrew steamer Matangi, ■which will arrive in Nelson on Bth June in order to relieve the steamer Arahura and the steamer Ngaio, when these ships are undergoing their annual overhaul and Government inspection.
The Matangi was built for an Australian Company in 1908, and was used on the Brisbane coast, her name being Mourilyan. She is a vessel of 1349 tons gross, with a length of 220 feet, breadth 36ft, depth 11 feet, and was built by A. Stephen and Sons, Ltd., Glasgow. Until recently the Matangi was used on the Auckland-Tauranga run, but owing to the falling off of trade she was relieved by.the Ngapuhi, which in turn was superseded by the auxiliary schooner Ronald. For some months the vessel has been lying at anchor in the Auckland harbour, but during this week has been docked for cleaning and painting. She will take up the Nelson-Wel-lington running immediately on her arrival from Auckland.
