GOVERNMENT PURCHASE PROPERTY AT FEILDING Details regarding the area of land at Feilding treccntljy pui'cliased by the Government in connection with its land settlement policy were given to a “Post” reporter yesterday by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. O. W. Forbes). The .Minister said that the Government had, on the recommendalioai of the Dominion Land 1 Purchase Board, arranged for the purchase of about 844 acres of Mr R. L. Levin’s well-known “Westella” property, which is situated three miles from Feilding and seven miles from Palmerston North. Mr Levin would retain the homestead block and buildings thereon. “The area purchased is practically all level, a small portion being undulating, and the soil is of a rich loamy nature, varying from alluvial silt on shingle formation to a heavy clay subsoil,” said Mr Forbes. “The land is admirably suitable for dairying, and is served by several dairy factories, including the Glaxo Factory. Permanent water will he available on most of the subdivisions, and where there is no permanent water a supply can lie obtained by sinking to a depth of from 12 to 16 feet. “The Crown will obtain possession of the area purchased on the 30th April next, and in the meantime the survey and reading will ho gone on with after a careful investigation has been made as to the manner in which the Ifind sliould he subdivided. There are three cottages cm the area acquired, conse quently three of the subdivisions will ho served with dwellings. It is anticipated that the block will he subdivided into from ten to twelve farms, and the land will he placed on tile market about the time the Crown obtains possession, namely, the 30th April next. The land acquired is all in grass, with exception of some small plantations, the pasture being"" excellent. The existing fences are in good order, and will, in the majority of cases, he used ns sub divisional boundaries. The surrounding district is practically given up to dairying, and, without question, this new area will be a valuable adjunct to that industry.”
