A notable feat in mountain climbing was accomplished last Sunday by Miss K. Gardiner, cf Liverpool,' England, when she made an ascent of Mt. Couk (12,34.7 ft.), in 15=) hours, a record time for a lady climber. An exceptionally fine view was obtained from the top, both coasts being clearly visible. Miss Gardiner has climbed in Switzerland and Canada and expresses the opinion that New Zealand guides can hold their own with the guides in those countries. Turner’s party, which lias returned to Pembroke, made the first ascent and exploration of Mount Brewster and its hitherto unknown and magnificent ice and snow fields which are the so'troj of the Makarora river. The party later \vas joined by Mr E. Miller, of Dunedin, and Dr. Bathgate, of Ashburton, and explored the head of Wilkin valley and made the first ascents cf the Castor and Pollux, making important discoveries, including .two passes connecting tiie east with the west coast valley.
