CANTERBURY CROPS

HARVESTING DELAYED

(By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail")

CHRISTCHURCH, Bth January,

Though hard things have been said by townsfolk'about tlie weather lately, the language of farmers who are anxious to get oil with shearing and harvesting has been even stronger. There are thousands of sheep still to be shorn on the Canterbury Plains, and in the back country the work is even more retarded, and it will be February before some of the stations finish shearing. With such brief intervals of sunshine and no drying wind, sheep have not had a chance to dry and farmers and shearers alike have become disheartened by continual delays. Harvesting, too, is very backward. No wheat is ripe yet and will not be for a fortnight or more. In Ashburton district they are cutting oats, but mostly for chaff.
