THE INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE
iTo the Editor)
Sir, —As an elector of this district 1 would like to suggest that the attitude adopted by Mr Atmore in this election is aii insult to the intelligence of the electors. At his first meeting in the Theatre Hoyal he stated he was an Independent, but was prepared to support Sir Joseph Ward in Ins £70,000,000 gamble, because he thinks it a sound scheme, very good (but more sound than anything else). When the United Party published their candidates’ list Mr Atmore’s name was included. He, Mr Atmore, states that they had no authority from him to do so. Very good. At Spring Grove, in answer to a question. Mr Atmore stated if he got the opportunity lie would take a seat in the Ward Cabinet. I would suggest, sir, that Opportunist is a more fit name than Independent. 1 would like Mr Atmore to define how a man can be Independent and also a Cabinet Minister in a party Government. At the same time, evidently Mr Atmore is goiqg to be an Independent up to a point. If that point is reachecl overhoard goes Independence. Mr Atmore ought to get off the fence and lay all his cards on the table. However, if Mr Atniore is waiting or expecting to see a Ward Government formed I am afraid he will have to wait until the Boulder Bank floats out to sea.—l am, etc., . ELECTOR. Nelson, 12th November.
