NEW ZEALANDERS WIN
ROWING AT HENLEY REGATTA WANGANUI UNION TEAM TWICE VICTORIOUS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright
MELBOURNE, This Day. Tlie Wanganui Union Crew’s racing boat was damaged beyond repair on arrival at Melbourne. The boat was not damaged at Sydney, but appears to have received a heavy knock at the coxswain’s seat, which broke the back of the boat and badly splintered it fore and aft. The crew used the Melbourne Club’s boat which was satisfactory. In the Henley regatta in the first heat of the Stewards’ Challenge Cup, the Wanganui Union defeated Albert Park by four lengths, and in the final the New Zealand crew was first, Rutherglen second, won by three lengths. Wanganui Union were never troubled in the heat or in the final, leading from the start.
The powerful leg drive and easy body recovery contributed largely to the pace. Critics were favourably impressed with the crew. This was the New Zealanders’ third successive win in the Stewards’ Challenge Cup. Healey, the Wanganui stroke, expresed gratification with tlieir success. The weather was somewhat showery. Mosman (Sydney) won the senior eights from Mereantiles.
