TTie “New York American’s” Washington correspondent states that under the recently passed White Merchant Marine Bill, under which the Government advances three-quarters of the construction ecsts of new merchant vessels, the United States Shipping Board lias arranged with private American interests for building in American shipyards 34 modern steamers for the trans-Atlantic and the trans-Pacific passenger and freight trade.

The vessels range from 12,000 to 30,000 tons, and the speed will be from 14 to 30 knots. They will be equipped with Diesel engines, and have an electric drive. Further details of the enterprise are being kept secret.
