THE NELSON SEAT

CANDIDATES’ MEETINGS MR H. ATMORE Mr Harry Atmore addressed the electors at Atawhai schoolroom last evening. Seventeen were present and Mr Scott was voted to the chair. The candidate dealt with the question of education, land, advances for settlers, cost of administration, the National Debt, and taxation. He stressed the necessity for more money being available in the State Advances Department as much land was deteriorating for want of capital to effect improvement. In conclusion he said the greatest obstacle to the advancement of Nelson and tbe ushering in of a time of gnat prosperity was its isolation which could be removed by tbe completion of the railway line, towards which the Government this year had placed only £20,000 on the Estimates —a paltry sum insufficient to construct a single mile of railway and at this insignificant rate of progress it would take more than 70 years to finish the line and obtain access to our southern markets. Mr Atmore received an unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings. This evening Mr Atmore will address the electors at the hall, Opouri Valley, Marlborough; and on Monday evening at Wai-iti schoolroom at G. 45 p.m. MR F. W. 0. SMITH Mr F. W .0.
