Tile funeral of the late Mr Peter Henry took place yesterday afternoon at the Nelson cemetery, and was attended by a large and representative body of mourners anxious to paly their last respects to a worthy citizen. A short service was held at the home prior to the cortege moving off. The late Mr Henry was a citizen of nearly 54 years’ standing. He was a native of Walls, Shetland Islands, and together with his wife and two children arrived in Nelson by the ship Ocean Mail on. the 9th November, 1874. A few weeks later lie left for Karamea and was one of its pioneer settlers and endured the many hardships incidental to the life of a settler in wild and strange surroundings. This told-on his health and he returned to .Nelson about three years later, and he had been a resident of the city ever since. He was a man of quiet and unassuming temperament and respected by all who knew him. Mr Henry was one of the oldest surviving original members of the Congregational Church, yvhiclv he joined in its early days under the late Rev. John Beckenham. During the whole of the intervening years, in its prosperity and in its adversity, he had been one. of its staunchest and most consistent members. He held the position of deacon and also other important and trusted offices, and was most- regular in his attendance. Mr Henry bad attained the ripe age of 82 years. He was pre-deceased by his younger brother Robert a few months ago; and he leaves a widow and grown-up family.

Latest advice indicates that Sir Joseph Ward, Leader of the United Party,-who had to seek medical advice with regard to eye trouble, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery, and hopes to leave for the South next week to continue his electoral campaign.

Mr H. E. Stephens, representaf ive in Great Britain of the New Zealand Fruit Control Board, who has been spending a few days at his home in Stoke, leaves for Wellington this evening to attend a meeting of the board. He will return to Nelson about the end of next week.
