BRITISH AUTHORESS DEAD PRIME .MINISTER’S EULOGY LONDON, 17lh October. As a result of the publicity given to the books of Mary Webb by the Prime Minister, Mr Baldwin, morn than 50,000 copies have been sold. Mrs Webb died unnoticed in January. The Prime .Minister said he regarded her as orie of the best English writers. “It is an ironical reflection,” says tho “Daily News,” “that if Mrs Webb were alive’ she would now be enjoying four-figure royalties.” Mr Baldwin still exhibits a lively interest in bis literary discovery and has written a preface to “Precious Bane,” a collected edition of Mrs Webb’s works.
