NEW POLICY IN ITALY

ENCOURAGING THE FARMERS

LONDON. 17th October.

The Rome correspondent ofTho “Manchester Guardian” says Signor Mussolini distributed prizes, ranging in value from £2O to £2OO,- among farmers for increasing their grain output in the last 12 months. His own name was among the winners of the £2O prizes for tripling the yield of his small experimental farm, which he looks after when the cares of State permit-. Signor Mussolini, in a speech, said the 1928 harvest had increased by 10,000,-. 000 quintals as compared with. 1927, totalling 62,260,000 quintals. He said this was a great step toward the ultimate victory in the battle of grain, whereby Italy would become self-sup-porting. The Prime 'Minister’s speech follows a recent law under which large landowners who do not improve their yield, will suffer expropriation. This forms part of tlic intensive “back to the land” nolicy on which Fascism has embarked. ■lt is proposed to assist 900,000 farmers with £7,000,000 over a period of 30 years.
