SUCCESSFUL CONCIiRT AT SCHOOL 01 : MUSIC

Those who made (he School of Music (.heir piece of entertainment last evening, were (reeled, to an interesting anil varied programme by the Nelson Harmonic Society. There was a fair attendance, on.mu unpleasant, wet night. A full programme' included orchestral, choral, organ and pianoforte items. It opened with Schuherl's Overture to Unsnmimde which was a delightful orchestral number. High class as all the items were, the opening overture was the best of the evening. The chorus and orchestra, combined in Cowcn’s “Song of Thanksgiving" and gave an admirable interpretation. A most popular item was an organ solo by the Rev. G. 11. Schurr, Allegro pomposa fruity. ,13. J. Bella by’s Sonata in 1) niinoi'—Mas. Doc. The organist was Jointly, app|i,uid,ed and responded 1 with another number which was also much appreciated. An outstanding feature of the evening was the orchestral work, and “‘Benedictus” (A, C. McKenzie), was another instrumental item, which, appealed, .j The first part of the programme was eifcfecl with two cleverly-executed pianoforte solos, Capriccjo in B minor—Brahms, and .ah encore number nlnved by Miss D. Sims, L.R.A.M. ‘ ‘ The, second part, of the programme consisted of a presentation of Mendelssohn’s “Walpurgis Night.” The overture in this was admirably interpreted. Mr F. W. Huggins was the tenor soloist and ATI 1 11. Kidson the bass. The difficult. chorus work was well done, and groat credit is again due to Mr J. li. Lemmer, A.R.A.M., the. conductor, for the artistic result achieved. Airs B. Vining was the pianiste throughout, the evening, and her task was a big one, ably carried out.
