- MEETING OF COUNCIL sieipoßsrs an© cuenc-ir&l The. ordinary meeting of the Nelson City Council was held at Ihe Municipal Chambers last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt). Councillors R. Watson, F. W. 0. Smith, J. A. Stringer, W. C. Harley, W. McConchio, G. P. Russell, S. A* Gibbs, E. R. Neale and J. Wigzell.

PAYMENTS T)ie following payments were authorised:^

CORRESPONDENCE Among the correspondence dealt .with was the following:— \V. C. Harley, on behalf of F. If. Sharland, offered to sell land on the Ma'itai river bank for the proposed road between Auckland Point and Trafalgar street' bridge.—The Mayor said the matter was yathef an/important one, and he ipovjef tliai-' it go td Committee, the Engineer to report.—Agreed; to. The : Nelson Rugby Union wrote applying . for a’ playing ground at-King’s Acre,—A similar request was received from the Nelson Football Association. The;Mayor said no doubt other sporting bodies would .make spnilar applications. There was no hurry to deal with the matter and he moved that it be referred to Committee. —Agreed to. A request- was received from A. C. Rout for permission to clear, and plant shrubs on a portion of the Collingvvood street cemet.ery. A letter was also received from Miss J. Bond protesting Against the cemetery being planted-. —After the Mayor had explained the position, adding that the cemetery was in a very.untidy state, it was, decided that the .Council visit the locality, as well as the Old Cemetery, and see what could be done' to effect improvements. The Railway Department forwarded an . amended agreement as to the transfer of foreshore land for execution. —Resolved that the common seal of the Council be affixed to tlie agreement. ' P. Day requested the Council to form the approach to Tiis bowser pumps and offering to pay cost. —Granted. The ' Malta i Bowling Club applied for remission of rates on the bowling green. —Granted. Plans for foundations of the new electric plant were received from W. Coward and Co. , Residents of Rentone street requested improvements to footpath and watei - table;—Referred to Committee. COMMITTEE OF .WHOLE COUNCIL Present: The Mayor (chairman), Councillors Wigzell, Smith, McConchie, Stringer, Watson, Harley and Russell. '■ The’committee reported as follows: (1) On letter soliciting advertisements in school exercise books ft That they have no recommendation to make. (2) On letter from Mr R. Scoltock requesting a lease of a portion of the foreshore reserve for a benzine store: That he be asked to supply further particulars as to the quantity of benzine and other dangerous goods he would wish to store. —(3) As to proposed widening ot Weka street: Cpnsideration deferred. (4) Af? to expenditure in General Accoiint: Consideration deferred.—(s) As to sick pay to employees: (a) That m future in cases where employees have been in constant employment of the Council for not less than three , years they be allowed half-pay up to a period of a fortnight on production of a imiidical certificate.—(o) As to proposed improvements to .Waiinea road: That the City Engineer report as to tlie widening of the road with estimate of cost.—(7) As .to letter from Mr Percival requesting the .Gopncil to lay a sewer in the lane off Brook street to enable him to connect his premises therewith: That Mr Percival be informed that the total cost of laying the sewer Would be approximately Loi and that if each of the property owners is prepared to contribute Ins proportion" of the cost tlie Council will allow'them to repay the sum by injjtalments under the usual agreement.— /gj"As to proposed widening of Queen s road: Consideration deferred the City Engineer to report.—(9) As to private wav' N.' W. Naylor: "Consideration deferred.— (10) As to electric Light Account deposit £2500: That the deposit be renewed for a further three rponths. Clause 5 (a) was deleted, and deferred for consideration. CITY ENGINEER’S REPORT The' City Engineer (Mr J .G. Littlejohn) reported:— and footways: Ihe path m Weka street has been formed as diree-, ted. Repairs have been effected on Shakespeare Walk. The Waiinea County grader was hired for two days and was put over Emano street and Brook street above tlie quarry. Paring the grass was also done on St. \mcent, Hampden, North Esk, Totara, Parere, Vanguard, Manuka and Nile streets. The' widening of the corner at Moorhouse’s in Brook street is in hand. The culvert which crosses tlievoad at this point is so defective it is necessary to renew it.-Reserves: Except the {Travelling the work on Botanical Hill is completed. The filling of King s Acre and the waTTing of the ditches is practically completed and top-dressmg is now in progress. The triangular corner fronting St. Vincent street is also being levelled off—Drainage: he extension of .the Ngatitama street sewer is in progress out of loan. Electi c power station: This work is being proceeded with.as the tide permits. In reply to Councillor Russell, the Engineer said it would not be poss.hje to play heavy games on King s Acre fm year—until the grass was established. GASWORKS REPORT The nasworks report for the month showed? Coal carbonised 419 tons; gas manufactured per ton of coal cubic feet; gas manufactured <>, cubic fe"et; coal in stock 463 tom; coal received during month i.ffi.lo. to,

coal in hand 797 tons; coke in hand 2GGG bags; tar in hand 10,350 gallons. Value of residuals £437 7s 2d.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER’S REPORT

The electrical engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported:—City applications 1855 (increase 13); city extensions 899 (20); Taliuna applications 162 (nil); Stoke applications 76 (nil); Wakatu applications 25 (nil); totals 3017 (33). Lighting load applied for ' 1023 k.w. (S); heating load applied for 14fH k.w. (36); power load applied for 1192 k.w. (2); Taliuna load applied for 192 k.w. (nil); Stoke load applied for 72 k.w. (nil); Wakatu load applied for 31 k.w. (nil); totals 4001 k.w. (46 k.w.). Peak load, day, 430 k.w.; peak load, night, 490 k.w.

ABATTOIR REPORT The abattoir manager reported that the following stock were slaughtered during the fortnight: Cattle 89, calves B,.sheep 552, lambs 134, pigs 68; total 851. During the period two sheep were condemned. GENERAL Only one tender (taken in Committee) was received for the, rubbish service and it was referred to the Committee of the whole Council. It was .resolved to erect two notice boards at (lie Sands notifying .that the esplanade is for the use of pedestrians only.' 5 A'return showing the balance of tlie roads loan available is to be submitted to the next meeting of the Council. On the motion of Councillor Stringer the Engineer is to report on top-dressing the footpaths in the, outskirts of the city. The Council rose at 10.15 p.ih.
