EXTENDED RIVER LIMITS

COMMISSION APPOINTED

ORDER OF REFERENCE - For some years Messrs H. Atmore and R; Pi . Hudson, iM.’sP.,-in conjunction with others interested, have made representations regarding the extension of restricted river limits in the Bay. Advice has now been received that the Government lias decided to set up a commission to take evidence in Nelson. Captain L. G. H. Worrall (chairman) ana Captain O':; Wilkinson have been appointed by the Governor-in-Council to act on the Commission, • which will sit at Nelson on 22nd inst. The Commission will inquire and report upon the -following, questions:— (1) Whether) having regard to the safety of -ships plying therein, and of life and property on the said ships, the extendedri'.ivei?. end partially smoothwater limits -for The port of Nelson hereinbefore, referred to- should be increased. (2) If the Commission is o| opinion that the said, limits should be increased' then-to what extent such increase should be granted, and whether such increase should be granted generally or restricted to any specified size or class or classes of ship, and under what conditions, if any, as to the manning and equipment of ships such increase should be grafted. ‘ . . (3) If the Commission is of opinion tirat the said limits should not be increased, but should be modified or altered in any other manner, then to what extent such' modification or alteration should be made. (4) Further, to inquire into and report upon the following question: Whether having regard to the special circumstances of New Zealand, especially in respect of coastal regions without roads it is possible with due regard to the safety of life to modify or relax the statutory provisions and regulations and instructions to surveyors in respect of launches carrying passengers or cargo in such coastal regions, and if so, in what respect and to what extent such statutory provisions, regulations and instructions may with such-regard to safety he modified or relaxed. And, further, • i (5) To report upon such other matters arising out of the premises as may come under the notice of the commission _in the course of its inquiries and on which the Commission may think it desirable or expedient to report.
