WINTER CUP AND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE (By Telegraph.— Special to “Ths Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, 10th August! For the Grand National Steeplechase, Beau Cavalier and Pouri are the popular fancies, but Tuki also has many admirers who expect the southern horse to be on hand at the finish ready to lake advantage of any mistakes that may be made by the other pair. Two of the final acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase, Pouri and Matu, have had no previous experience of Riccarton fences, while Wiltshire’s acquaintance with them is restricted to yesterday’s schooling effort. With a field of twenty-one horses engaged in the Winter Cup, the mile race presents a very open appearance. Panther is a hot favourite in Wellington where another Trentham candidate Royal Damon is strongly fancied; along with Kaiti. Among the South Island candidates Rotor, Royal Saxon and First Sight are most frequently mentioned. *
