MOUNT EDEN ESCAPEE
BUCKLEY AT TAUMARUNUI COURT (By Telegraph—Pres* Association) .. , TAUMARUNUI, 10th'"August. The\ local Coitrthouse was crowded this morning when Jolin Leslie Buckley, the man who escaped from Mount Eden Gaol recently, appeared before Justices on charges of breaking and entering the Taumarunui Sash and Door Factory and stealing £5 in cash and three cheques, breaking and entering the Taumarunui Hardware Company’s premises and stealing money and cheques to a total value of £ls 18s 9d, and break ing and entering the shop of the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company and stealing money and goods to the value of £4 16s 9d. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, asked that the charges be taken separately, which was granted. The charge of breaking and entering and theft from the Taumarunui Hardware Company was taken first. On this charge the accused, after evidence regarding identification and finger prints had been given, were committed to the Supreme Court at Hamilton on 28th August for trial. Detective Walsh gave evidence of finding a finger-print on a piece of glass at the Hardware premises. The accused admitted to witness that he stayed at Meredith House on Bth July under , the name of de Presque, and during the evening persuaded a party of golfers leturning by car to Raetihi to take him with them.
The evidence of finger-print experts was that the prints of Buckley’s thumb coincided with the marks found on the glass. _ TAUMARUNUI, This Day. The further charges against John Leslie Buckley, of breaking and entering and theft from ithe Taumarunui sash arid door factory, and the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, were heard yesterday afternoon. The former charge was dismissed, while on the charges relating to the Auctioneering Company, accused was committed for trial at Hamilton, v A further charge was made against accused of stealing and converting to his own use a Packard car at Remuera, which was eventually found abandoned near Taumarunui. Accused pleaded guilty and ■was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, to be concurrent with his present sentence.
