NOISY MOTORS

(To tho Editor)

Sir,—l wish to protest through your valuable paper against the action of motorists using the Bocks road and Wakefield quay at night time. The consistent noise these folic make is to say tlio least over tlio odds. The least (bey could do would be to study other folk a little, but not them. They rush past your door at anything from 30 to 50 miles an hour, with the cut out open, making a noise like a machine gun. Imagine, sir, lying in bed and listening to ono of these maniacs on wheels slack up for every bend in Bocks road right down to Talmna. Some of these road hogs ought to bo severely punished if caught. In my opinion severe lines are needed for offences of this kind so as to act as a deterrent. T was awakened at 1.15 this morning by an individual on wheels who played a tuno on his electric motor horn ;i)l tlio way from Victoria crescent to Richardson street. Now, sir, I think that is oveteJLho odds and wo ought to ha.vo a night patrol from the port to Tahuna to try and put a stop to this sort of thing. The noise they make must surely interfere viitli tho health of the children. It must worry people who are light sleepers. It must also bo a severe drawback to the sick and tho aged, and in some cases must surely hasten the end of these unfortunates. I have seen my wife walk the floor for an hour with a sick child, and when nicely'settled down to be awakened half an hour afterwards by one of these maniacs. Without exaggeration. sir, the noise these folk make through the night (especially motor hikes) is absolutely indecent. What are tho civic authorities doing in the matter? Cannot they do something? Our Traffic Inspector can’t be working night and day. There should be. a night inspector as well. I have not a car or a motor hike. If I did 1 would try and make them as noiseless as possible instead of trying to make as much noise as I could. I understand it is a pastime ot some cyclists to run round early in tho morning making as much noise as possible to stir up the natives.—l am, etc., "\ W. J. MARSHALL. Nelson,- 10th August.
