SWIMMING

CHARLTON IN FINALS

LONDON, Bth August

An. Australian Press Association special message from Amsterdam says that Charlton leisurely paced throughout in the 400 metres semi-final, always having a good deal iii reserve, though Zovilla’s win was not' surprising after his good form yesterday. Hatfield did not compete. Ault led for the first 200 metres, when Zorilla came up, leading Charlton and Ruddy by a few feet, with the remainder already beaten. The Argentinian turned last, and 150 yards ahead was Charlton steadily increasing his lead on Ruddy. Zorilla heat -Charlton by two yards and Ruddy was three yards further back. There was an amusing incident in tho third lap. when Borg, in the spectators stand, ran to the water’s edge urging on Charlton. The Swede was indignant when attendants ordered him hack to the competitors’ quarters. Borg immediately went ahead in his semi-final leading by 2 yards at the 100 metres mark. After that lie did not maintain his big lead, characteristic of his .recent races. Takaishi, Clapp and Crabbe swam in a line just behind until Takaishi tailed off, wihile the two Americans hung on splendidly, Crabbe almost drawing level with Borg, who was swimming easily however. The Swede won by two feet from Crabbe., Clapp was a yard further back. Boast, as “ expected was unable to make an impression on the record breaker Lanfer in the semi-final of the 100 metres back stroke. Boast was with the leaders early, but was gradually outdistanced to finish five yards behind. Moorchouse did not qualify.
