(To the Editor) Sir, —Hiss Bond’s letter is a, valuable) historical contribution regarding . tho; last .resting place of sorno of. Nelson’s! earliest 'pioneers, and if. it .results in; some attention,, being ,paid to iNplson’si •brave and yorthy founders, ,ib -.-ywOl ,/iuot havo been penned in vain.. To-day, 1 was on the ground for >i)ie first time in, my life, and' lhe ••whole place is.a most awful wreck, Tombstones are lying prone, some of them one on top of another} fences have fallen into decay, the trees are unkempt and uncaved for, and lank grass abounds. Some of the inscriptions are now quite ijndeciphcr- j able, and some are blackened ns though subject in passing Names at Rome period'of I heir long history. Tho'site is remarkably well chosen--another tribute to the taste and judgment of our early colonists —as near as may be in the centre of Nelson, on a good elevation on the crown of, the hill commanding a most beautiful view of the city with the Bay beyond, and on every other. Hand the restful mountains fear their heads. One interesting inscription on the Toy tomb I copied. This was erected to Mrs boy wife died on the 6th October, 1869, aged 70 years: , . . • "How blest is. our sister bereft ~ . • Of all that could burden her mind; How easy the soul who has left This wearisome body behind. Of evil incapable thou, , Whose relics with envy I soe, No longer in misery now, No longer a sinner like me.” I would suggest a working bee for some Saturday afternoon, and so get this much negiccted spot put into decent order.—l am, etc., READER.
