QUARTERLY STATEMENT

WELLINGTON, 6th August. The Public Accounts for the three months ended 30th June, 1928, appear in a special "Gazette" this week. The following summary of the transactions in the ordinary rovenuo account (Consolidated Fund) lias been issued by the Hon. Minister of Finance:— Revenue. —The total revenue received for the period amounted to £4,167,937, as compared with £4,074,260 for the previous year after allowing for tho separation of Post and Telegraph accounts,' an increase of £93,677. Tho principal increases are:— Motor vehicles—Duties, licenses, etc., £417,869 (new item consequent on the passing of motor Spirits luxation Act, J 927, and section 24 of the Finance Act, 1927, No. 2. This increase will be offset by an increase in expenditure under special Acts, when the receipts are allocated*. Stamp and death duties £31,484; interest on capital liability, Post and Telegraph, £72,000 (new item consequent. on. tho passing of the Post and Telegraph Amendment Act, 1927 which came into force on Ist April, 1928); miscellaneous, £30J567; departmental receipts, £39,461. The principal decreases are: Customs, £518,289, and incoWtax £24,617. Expenditure.—The expenditure for the three months was: Permanent appropriations £4,091,737; annual appropriations £1,631,098, a total of £5,722,835, as compared with (after allowing lor separation of Post and Telegraph accounts)— permanent appropriations £4,005,076, annual appropriations £1,640,435, a- total of £5,645,511 during the corresponding period last year, an increase of £77,324, made up as follows; I'crmanent appropriations £86,661 (increase), annual appropriations £9337 (decrease), or an increase of £77,324. Under permanent appropriations tho principal increases aro: Special Acts £252,604 whilst there is a decrease of £174,681 in interest, duo to greater recoupments from other accounts. The increase of £252,604 in special Acts is mainly duo to the following:—Family Allowances Act, 1926, section 18, £7000; Finance Act, 1927, No. 2 ; section. 24, £195,600; transfer to Main Highways Account of tire tax and fees and fines under the Motor Vehicles Act (new item) • losses on isolated sections and branch lines of railway, £25,500; Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, section 9 (lb), £10,200 (proportion of tax on. motor spirits payable to boroughs, new item); war pensions, £28,100.
