PARIS, sth August. The suburb of Iviy, comprising 40,000 inhabitants, where the authorities prohibited a Communist anti-militarist demonstration,'was in a state of siege yesterday. Armed police patrolled the streets from dawn, and 3000 police and firemen arriving by motor lorries occupied strategic posts. Services were suspended. An order was issued to search the town for Communists, who hid in cafes and bars, whither gendarmes pursued them. The mayor smacked a gendarme's face, and was promptly arrested. The apprehension of 500 Communists followed.
Garrisons in Paris were detained in barracks in case of violence, as the situation was regarded as a test of strength between police and Communists. Fifty "red" guards were arrested as they left a demonstration in Paris last night. The position later became quiet.
